The
“Signs of Affection” series started when
my friend Linda Leighton asked me to do a Valentines
Day show at her ceramics gallery. We wanted to avoid
the obvious heart and cupid themes and decided to work
with non-traditional expressions of friendship and love.
The show explored visual short hand and symbols, such
as Xs and Os, that some might argue trivialize deep
emotional connections, but at the same time make such
feelings more accessible and easier to express. Some
of our references included hands, childhood memories,
knots, American Sign Language, sweets, and other icons
of affection. I have continued to work with symbols
and shorthand notations in my felted work in an effort
to expand on the story telling process I use in my weaving.
