NEEDLE FELTING: A NEW ADVENTURE
Learn a needle-felting process that is simple, and as spontaneous as drawing with a pencil or finger painting. It's even erasable until "set" by washing! Anyone who usually works with technical or material restraints will love the freedom and playfulness of the process, but the class is not about fairies or gnomes; through hands-on exercises and illustrated lectures, we’ll learn about basic design elements, color theory, and the nature and properties of fibers, and textile techniques.
Combine yarns and roving with hand-woven, wet-felted, or purchased cloth. Learn how to choose and combine materials to create complex fiber works with color, depth, and texture. We will experiment with techniques and materials to create samples and/or samplers, as well as complete finished independent work. We’ll also discuss ways of adding this process to the work you already do- painting, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, quilting, collage, or any other medium.
This workshop is designed for everyone from professional artists to novices who just want to explore their creative side. There is no need for expensive equipment or facilities, the process is portable, and the cost is entirely up to you. Materials are readily accessible and needle felting is a great way to use found and recycled materials or to experiment with small amounts of those expensive fabrics or yarns you adore. Whether you are interested in form or function, concept or aesthetic, process or result, you’ll find needle felting is addictive!

NEEDLE FELTING as an Art Medium
Needle felting is a popular craft form but the process can also result in expressive and sophisticated works of art. You will love the freedom and playfulness of the process, but this class is not about fairies or flowers. Through hands-on exercises and illustrated lectures, we’ll cover basic design elements, color theory, the nature and properties of fibers, and textile techniques. Learn how to choose and combine materials to create complex fiber works with color, depth, and texture. Throughout the week we’ll experiment with techniques and materials to create samplers, and produce finished independent work. We’ll also discuss ways of adding this process to the work you already do- painting, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, quilting, collage, or any other medium. This course is for everyone from professional artists to novices. There is no need for expensive equipment, materials or facilities, the process is portable, and the cost is entirely up to you. Needle felting is also a great way to use found and recycled items. Whether you are interested in form or function, concept or aesthetic, process or result, you’ll find needle felting is versatile and addictive!

BURNOUT FABRICS and DYEING
Burnout or devoré is a mild chemical process that dissolves or “burns away” certain fibers in the cloth only where you print or paint it. On silk backed velvet it leaves transparent areas with no pile. On 100% cotton it will leave holes. With blended yarns it simply thins the fabric and lets light through. We’ll work with both a commercial product and a homemade burnout paste. You’ll get the recipe and learn how to successfully design and process the cloth. On the second day we will dye the fabrics with special dyes that result in two different colors in one simple process!

MORE WEAVING: TEXTURE! PLEATS, BUMPS, HOLES AND LUMPS!
We'll explore fibers, structures and finishing techniques to change flat fabric into dimensional surfaces. Double weaves and simple twills can make pleats, deflected weaves create holes, woven shibori techniques gather the cloth and combinations of fibers and non-chemical after-treatments permanently set the textures. If time permits, we will also explore a safe chemical burnout technique that removes certain threads in your single layer woven cloth to leave behind a more transparent double-weave structure!
